Gay/Straight Singer Debate: Divas vs....

Many of you have seen our quadrant graphs before. If not, here's a link to our collection. We don't mean for this to be a definitive list, there's no way we could fit them all.

As usual, not everything fell into predictable stereotypes. But, even allowing for kitsch, I can't take Bette Midler seriously, and GG has the same problem with Roy Orbison.

How sad is it that I'll never get to see any of my quadrant's "likes" perform live? Well, I saw Micheal Jackson once (posts here and here), and there's still a chance for Tom Jones. Wait a minute. Now that I think about it, GG and I once had the option of seeing Tom Jones live when we were working in Vegas a few years ago... and he talked me out of it! A few months later, we were back for another event and we managed to snag tickets to Elton John, though. So all is (mostly) forgiven. Think I can guilt him into a Kid Rock show?

Yes, but you can still see James Taylor together.

I saw Elton John a few years ago. It was almost as good as being back in high school. Except I had side view seats and I could see him reading the lyrics off a teleprompter. That was kind of a drag. C'mon Elton, you're making a buttload of money here...and you're not singing anything that isn't 20, no 30 years old. Learn your damn lyrics! (But still, he was good. And I so loved him in high school!)

Dreamfarm Girl,

Welcome to GG/SG! Thanks for the comment.

And, to let you know, SG and I did see James Taylor together a few years ago. Good times. It was a straightforward concert, especially compared to the loony weird Elton John concert in Vegas.

Really? Elton John needed a teleprompter to sing his own songs? That's a little disappointing....

As for the graph, no super-huge surprises...altho, GG didn't go for the stereotypical "Cher" choice...I'm also a Tom Jones fan (from long ago)...never cared for Elvis, though.

You both like the classic rockers...that must make it easier to travel in the car together!

Aging stars in concert is never pretty. A friend saw the Rat Pack Reunion tour in the 1980s and said Frank Sinatra couldn't remember his own lyrics with THREE teleprompters. And Elton's not as old as Frank was at the time.

I'm fascinated by the guys' mutual dislikes - maybe that's what really constitutes friendship. They don't like heavy string arrangements and self-promoters - I know, you can argue about Bette Midler and others, but you get the idea, however you want to describe it.

Barbara Cook: Yes, gay. You know those Broadway stars who then go into cabaret. But, a gorgeous voice. And a huge gay following. Listen to her famous rendition of "Glitter and Gay."

Straight Guy sounds like my husband in terms of taste of music. I'll have to check out your other graphs, cause I'm a sucker for em. No wonder I married an accountant, huh?

Are you SURE we had the chance to see Tom Jones? I don't totally remember that. Wait, did we go see Avenue Q instead?

I can't imagine I'd turn down Tom Jones -- just so that I could say I'd been to a Tom Jones concert.

Maybe I was afraid I'd throw my hotel room flash pass on the stage.

Now you remember. Yes, you convinced me to see Avenue Q, even though Tom Jones tickets were half price (not a sign of a great show, I'll give you that).
