Comics Watch: Dagwood's New Charm Bracelet

Gay Guy,

Check out today's Blondie strip.

Dagwood is in a jewelry shop. "Charm bracelets for men?! No thanks! Not a chance!" But by the final panel he's proudly showing off his new bling. Pinky up and everything.

The joke is a little interesting here. Is it that straight guys are just an easy sales target? Hypocrites? Or that our homophobia fades if we get the chance to truly express ourselves? Or that everyone just needs to be fabulous once in a while?

I'm not much for jewelry. I wear a plain wedding ring and have several wrist options from Timex, Inc. But these do exist, and manly charm options include skulls, guns, swords, and handcuffs(?).

My read on the strip is that everyone feels better with a little bling every once in a while.

No rings, no neck chains here. My weak spot is watches. Love 'em. A few people think it's a bit of a problem.

I have six watches on my dresser: black plastic (plain face), black plastic (colorful face), grey mesh, brown strap, tan strap with big face, sports watch.

That's the dresser top.

I'm going to write a post about this issue.

I love a little bling, but I'm not sure if guys should be into too much bling. Or not too much bling all at once. Definitely even for women, if you look like you're wearing your entire jewelry box you need to put a few pieces back.

Back in the 1970s and 80s when men of all ages were wearing big gold chains and open shirts, my dad and I decided that if we ever saw GG's dad wearing one, the world was coming to an end. It hasn't happened yet, so I knew Harold Camping was lying.
