The Hunt for Gay Athletes

Straight Guy,

Interesting Washington Post article on scholarships for out athletes

Most frightening place for gay high school athletes is the locker room. Don't have to be a jock for the locker room be no fun.

Great idea and I admire the sentiment. But how many out high school athletes are there? I can't imagine how difficult that could be to do.

My God. You poor guys with your locker-room trauma. This is definitely one of those times when I'm glad I'm not a dude.

That's a lot of pressure to put on a teenager. They have to be an athlete. They have to figure themselves out. Be comfortable and proud of who they are. Come out. Apply, thus declaring all of the above to define themselves. THEN they have to beat out the other 5 people who had the courage to shoot for it. Then they have to deal with the back lash (if any, in a perfect world) if they win.

What happens when fraud sneaks in? How exactly will they verify the validity of the homosexual claim versus a desperate college bound kid?

Serious subject, serious attempt by adults to help out....but still seems similar to the Citizenship Oratorical Contests in my high school: a lot of work, some money, but plenty of social stigma.
