Gaydar Check: Dancer and Prancer Edition

Gay Guy,

Love it or hate it, Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" is definitely the standout holiday song of the modern age. Hard to believe it's 17 years old now. Mariah won't let the royalties fade, though. This year, she's released a new duet and video where a courgarish Mariah sets her sights on Justin Bieber within a shopping frenzy and product-placement orgy. Ugh. (UPDATE: Here comes Bublé with his mellow 2011 version, too.)

The original has it's charms. But it's actually more retro than modern. Mariah and her producers found something timeless... like a lost track from a Phil Spector holiday-wall-of-sound session with the Ronettes.

Some folks are helpless to resist. I read that Richard Curtis played it on a loop as he was scripting Love Actually, which garners similar love-it-or-hate-it sentiments.

Let me know what you think of the videos above. Both have gone viral in the last few days. No need to label these as gay or straight (though I love how the guy in the second video -- aspiring musician Preston Leatherman -- spends a moment ogling the Victoria's Secret display, just to clarify). Let's file them under "Joy."

Heck, I'll even throw in this one from the shipmates on the Royal Navy's HMS Ocean. Plenty of playful female participants, but of course the men have to take it up a notch in terms of suggestive posing, implied nudity, and cross dressing. What is it with soldiers and lip-dubs to female artists, anyway?

This song isn't going anywhere. Happy holidays.

Happy Holidays, guys!

Michael Bublé has a great voice but his vid is lame. I do love the HMS Ocean version.

Video #2 almost no-one looked up when when he jumped around, people get used to this too much.

Mariah Carey sucks, as does her Christmas song. Do not understand her gay icon status at all.

I have votes for comfort and joy:

For comfort, I do like the HMS Ocean vid. It's predictable and full of the usual dress up antics, but cute (not clever, but cute). I was charmed by spelling out of Merry Xmas, etc., at the end. It looked like modeling clay. The final slide totally got me: Looks like their "all I want for Christmas" pleadings will come true.

Joy's easy: Like you, my vote is for Preston Leatherman. It's happy. I love how the body language of most of the people in the background is "This isn't happening. I am not really participating in any way."

As for the first video--that was a lot of work. Hope it felt worth it. God rest ye, Mary. Gentlemen?

Anon,

What? I thought being an unbalanced but demanding diva has always been the fast track to gay icon status.

Sucking has nothing to do with it.

Hilarious!

Why don't you two make a video?

Thanks Anon(2),

Gay Guy and I have made plenty of videos together. That's part of what we do professionally. Respectable stuff, people, don't get this twisted.

But the odds of us lip-dubbing or dancing on film? Low.

SG,

Thanks for confirming that we are behind the camera.

Saw the first through a FB of a friend of mine. HMS Ocean version is probably my favorite, and the second one...I'm pretty sure that would be the reaction on my campus to a flashmob.

I'm almost tempted to have my housemates try something like this. We'd be able to pull it off, too, hopefully better than our version of Harry Potter Puppet Pals.

I assumed the video with Mariah and Justin would be for Macy's since they're both part of their menagerie of spokespeople. I guess she's solidified her cougar status with Nick's kids and this.

The dancing couple in the first video was funny but the matching outfits were horribly over the top. I don't recall the original Mariah video, so it might be a tribute that I missed.
